BACKGROUND
On September 10, 2003, three sisters traveled back from
a Fleetwood Mac concert in Greensboro, North Carolina. They had
rented a Ford Lincoln Town Car limousine for the special event.
Tragically, they were rear-ended on their way home and the vehicle
exploded into flames, killing all three inside. Tara, a former Miss
Winston, and her husband, Shawn, a former NASCAR crew chief, had
adopted an infant son two months prior to her death. Mysti and her
husband, Shane, were raising an eight-month-old daughter. Sixteen-year-old
Megan was on her first big outing with her adult sisters the night
they died.
Experts say,
that because of the exact same fuel tank design in the Ford Lincoln
Town Car, Mercury Grande Marquis and Ford Crown Victoria, that shields
should be installed on these as well as the Crown Victoria Police
Interceptor. All three models are subject to fuel tank punctures
in high-speed rear-end crashes. Currently, Ford is providing fuel
tank shields only for the CVPI and the Lincoln Town Car limousines.
Although this measure is a positive direction, there are millions
of Lincoln Town Car, Mercury Grande Marquis and Crown Victoria owners
still driving around unprotected.
